ARNOLDS PARK LIBRARY BOARD
Wednesday, September 9, 2015
5:00 P.M.

The Arnolds Park Library Board met Wednesday , September 9, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. in the Arnolds Park Library.

Present were Mitch Brown, Robb Keizer, Barb Woodley, Diana Jensen and Library Director, Kara Rice. Absent was Joyce Burgeson.

Minutes of August 12, 2015 were read. Brown moved to approve the minutes as read. Jensen seconded. All aye.

Librarian Certification Update: Rice reported all paperwork has been submitted. She is waiting to receive her signed certificate.

Library software update: The Atrium software demo that was scheduled last month got cancelled and Rice never got a call back. Cindy from Spirit Lake Library is not happy with Atrium. Rice looked at the Apollo software. If the board is comfortable with tabling a decision for now since the Arnolds Park Concourse software has been updated, Rice will look at other options. The Spirit Lake board did end up going with Apollo. If Arnolds Park decides to switch to another software, the Concourse payment will be transferred to the new software.

Arnolds Park Library Foundation Update: Heidi Toale, formerly of the Spencer Scholarship Foundation, met with Shar Eckard, President of the Arnolds Park Foundation, and Librarian Kara Rice. She wants to form a marketing committee and asked if Rice could think of bigger items the library needs. She also wants to make up a brochure about the foundation.

Library hours for winter: Rice said that the current library hours are Monday and Tuesday open until 6 p.m. After daylight savings time expires, it gets pretty quiet. It is mandatory that the library have one day a week open until 6:00. She asked what the board’s thoughts were. There was discussion of a concern of the library staff walking to the parking lot in the dark and wintry conditions. It was decided by the board to leave the hours consistent at 2 nights a week until 6:00 p.m., but have the policeman on duty at that time check to see that all staff and patrons get to their vehicles safely.

Iowa Library Association Conference: Cindy from Spirit Lake and Beth from Milford are attending this conference in Des Moines. Arnolds Park is not a member, but Rice was invited to go. The expenses would be two nights hotel and $130 conference fee. There is $600 in the budget for training. Rice would get 24 credit hours for attending the training. The board will discuss this again next month.

Circulation Computer/Wireless Scanner: Rice said the main computer at the front desk is older and starting to act up. The IT person said it needs replaced. He gave Rice a quote on a wireless computer of $850 plus two hours set up, a total of about $1,000. Rice reported that there is money in the budget. Discussion followed regarding the library needing more memory in the future. Rice said the wireless scanner is too expensive and will be something that can be put on the Library Foundation wish list.

Bills were presented for September in the amount of $2,688.52. Rice reviewed the bills. She said that the State Library of Iowa meeting is coming up. Registration cost is $25.00. The Century Link bill went up again. She called to see why the e-rate is not in place. She found out she needed to go online and fill out Form 486 which she did. It will take about six weeks before the lower rate kicks in.

There being no other questions, Keizer moved to approve the bills as presented. Brown seconded. All aye.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 14, 2015.
