ARNOLDS PARK LIBRARY BOARD
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2014
5:00 P.M.
The Arnolds Park Library Board met Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. in the Arnolds Park Library.
Members present were Joyce Burgeson, Mitch Brown, Diana Jensen, Robb Keizer, Barb Woodley, and Librarian Kara Rice.
The minutes of August 13th were read and approved.
Update on status of old items checked out: Rice said they sent out about 50 letters to patrons on older items. The staff will check the database of persons not allowed to check out until they return overdue items.
Update on overdue items: Last month the board discussed a DVD policy on number of items to be checked out. The staff does not want to limit DVD use. They suggested new patrons be limited to 6 each, but older patrons allowed to take more. After discussion, the board decided to keep the policy at 6 DVD’s per single patron and 10 DVD’s per family. Rice will put up signs in the DVD area.
Update on schooling and credit classes: To become a certified director, Rice went to Des Moines for a first class on September 9th. Tuesday mornings from 9 – 12 she will take online classes. She will take a class in Public Library Management in the spring. On Wednesday, September 17th there is a Northwest Library meeting at Buena Vista College.
Dickinson County library staff training is planned for November.
Update on trick or treating at the library: There are some conflicts on the date originally chosen. A new date will be set later.
Southwestern Advantage Books and Colibri Cover System: Rice showed the board a collection of books for kids available from Southwestern Advantage Books. There were 14 in a collection called “Ask Me” for $170.00 and 6 in a collection called “Learn and Explore” for $150.00. After a quick review, the board members agreed to purchase them.
The Colibri Cover system is a machine system that covers the library books with a protective cover and seals them on tightly. Rice estimated time to do it manually is about 15 seconds per book. The machine system sells for $2400. After discussion, the members agreed to revisit at a later date.
Location of library computers: Rice said at one time there was a computer in the non-fiction section in the back corner of the library. It was moved closer to the front and they noticed it got more use. One patron had asked that it be moved back to the corner for more privacy. The members agreed that it is good business to have all computers in a central location for better access.
Rice reported that a virus got into one of the computers and couldn’t be fixed. She was told one option was to install filters. Discussion followed. The board agreed there should be some filters. Rice will check with the other libraries as to what they use.
Bills were presented for September in the amount of $1,786.50. Rice reviewed the bills. There being no questions, Keizer moved to approve the bills as presented. Woodley seconded. All aye.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 8, 2014.
