The Arnolds Park Library Board met Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. in the Arnolds Park Library.
Present were Joyce Burgeson, Diana Jensen, Mitch Brown, Barb Woodley, Robb Keizer, and Library Director, Kara Rice.
The minutes of March 8, 2017 were read and corrected. Burgeson moved to approve the minutes as corrected. Jensen seconded. All aye.
Board Education Meeting: On Wednesday, April 5th at the Milford Community Center, local librarians and some of their board members met for a continuing education update. First they had a fun mixer game followed by a light dinner. Bonnie McKewon of the Iowa State Library presented a slide show on the three different tiers of library certification and the requirements for each tier. One of the requirement changes is each Board Member must have 3 hours of continuing education per year. She said there are seminars on the State website that members can review online. Rice said she will include a library education idea on the agenda in the packet sent to the board members prior to their monthly meetings. The members can then read this at their leisure. This will be starting with the agenda in July 2017.
Library Insurance: Rice said it is time to look at an updated policy. Our current policy is $140,000 on the library contents actual cash value (not replacement value). The deductible is $500 and annual premium of $851.
Walker Insurance Agency presented an upgraded option as follows:
$200,000 on library contents actual cash value. $2,500 deductible and annual premium of $1,034.
There was a discussion and agreement among the members that $140,000 was too low to cover the library contents. After further discussion, the board members wanted to vote on the upgraded quote from Walker Insurance. Jensen moved to increase the insurance to $200,000 valuation, with a $2,500 deductible and annual premium of $1,034. Brown seconded. All aye.
Rice said coverage would start right away. The cost will be absorbed in the budget.
Paint night at the library: Rice reported that March was full again. On Thursday, April 14th they are having a 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. paint day. They announced they prefer to have a parent or guardian in attendance.
Summer Reading Program: Rice said the summer reading program is ready to go. All events are planned.
May 31st is the “LEGO” movie with free popcorn and they are hosting a food drive for Upper Des Moines.
June 7th is the Science Center of Iowa presenting a program on building engineers called Building Blunders.
June 14th guest Brandon Aronson will present his magic tricks, illusions, and mind reading.
June 21st is the RAD Zoo bringing their reptiles and amphibians for the children to learn about and pet if they wish.
June 28th is Building a Better World. The participants will go to Central Park where there will be bouncy houses, dunk tank and other fun games. The fire department will give fire truck rides and water games. Pizza will be served.
In addition to the weekly programs, all kids can participate in the summer reading program. This year will be Reading Bingo. Once the kids get a bingo on their card, they get to spin the wheel and pick a free book. When the cards are full, the names will be placed in a drawing for a grand prize. Many local people and businesses have donated great prizes!
Bills were presented through April 12th in the amount of $2,447.31. Rice reported that the library did get a new credit card. Each Department now has their own card, but are linked together. Rice said the library won’t start using Apollo Software until July 31st. When that is in place, patrons can look up the card catalog online and check out books online. There being no questions, Keizer moved to approve the bills as presented. Burgeson seconded. All aye.
Rice said that each Tuesday is toddler story hour. Next week they will celebrate Earth Day. She plans to make an Earth Day cake. The toddlers will have a craft where they make a bird seed cake. She has other projects planned as well.
The next meeting will be held Wednesday, May 10, 2017.
