ARNOLDS PARK LIBRARY BOARD
Wednesday, August 9, 2017

The Arnolds Park Library Board met Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at 5:00 p.m. in the Arnolds Park Library.

Present were Mary Dreier, Diana Jensen, Barb Woodley, Mitch Brown, and library director Kara Rice. Absent was Robb Keizer.

The minutes of July 19, 2017 were read. Brown moved to accept the minutes as written. Dreier seconded. All aye.

Computer filters: Rice reported she received a letter dated July 25th informing her that the library had another incident of infringement of copyrighted material. This happened after the filter was installed which was to block this activity. She called Computer Zone on August 3rd and no one was in that could help. She called again August 4th and talked to Jeff. Jeff said it must have been due to the recent storm and the filter box was reset. He said he would be there late afternoon. He didn’t come. He didn’t come Monday, August 7th or Tuesday, August 8th. She is thinking of hiring another computer company. She contacted Steve Currell, The Computer Guy, and he advised that he doesn’t do contracts, just charges $70 per hour for his service. He said his usual response time is three hours.

After some discussion, Jensen moved that the Arnolds Park Library go with the Computer Guy for 60 day trial period and at the end of that time, review our computer service needs. Dreier seconded. All aye. Rice will present that plan to the City Council.

Rice said she would present a recap of this year’s summer reading program at next month’s meeting.

Apollo software discussion and possible action: Rice said the library’s current book systems software Concourse, was purchased in Oct. 2005. It is no longer able to meet all our needs. There are new standards coming out for patrons to view their account, view the library catalog, and check out books and movies, etc.

The contract with our current book system is up the end of October. If we switch to Apollo, all IT issues will be handled by them. They will update they system and take care of the card catalog. The original set up takes 3-4 hours. The Apollo software can link all library systems together and look at their records also. Library patrons will be issued a Versa card allowing them to check out material from any library. After some questions, Dreier moved that the library switch to Apollo circulation software and discontinue the Concourse software the first part of October. Rice said the additional funding will be absorbed in the budget. Brown seconded. All aye.

Library Board Continuing Education: The Board members must receive continuing education credits in order for the library to keep its certification status. Rice made available to the board Chapter One from the Iowa Library Trustee’s Handbook. The library board members read the material and reviewed Chapter 22, Library Board of Trustees code, outlining the board’s powers and duties.

Bills through July 19, 2017 were presented in the amount of $2,265.03. Rice reviewed the bills. There being no questions, Dreier moved to accept the bills as presented. Brown seconded. All aye.

The next meeting will be September 13, 2017.
