ARNOLDS PARK LIBRARY BOARD
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2015
5:00 P.M.
The Arnolds Park Library Board met Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. in the Arnolds Park Library.
Members present were Robb Keizer, Joyce Burgeson, Mitch Brown, Barb Woodley, and Librarian Kara Rice. Absent was Diana Jensen.
The minutes of January 14th were read. Keizer moved to approve and Burgeson seconded. All aye.
Under old business, Rice had looked into upgrading the SILO software to a program called Atrium. Cost would be $925. She was told there are statewide problems with SILO, so she felt it would be best for the library to wait to see if the state recommends a certain program.
Budget for FY 2016. The budget total is the same as submitted last year. The City Council will be discussing the library budget and voting on approval at tonight’s meeting.
Policy review for library accreditation due March 2015. Rice had sent all members copies of library policies and procedures for their review, including her suggested revisions. Review and discussion was held on each of the following:
1. Board of Trustees By-Laws
2. Library Circulation Policy
3. Collection Development Policy
4. Computer and Internet Policy
5. Long Range Plan 2015-2018
Brown moved to approve the policies and plans as presented. Burgeson seconded. All aye.
Bills for February totaled $1,292.34. Rice reviewed the bills. There was a problem with Amazon sending several bills for the same merchandise which was too confusing. The billing cycle has been changed to a 30 day net policy. There being no other discussion, Burgeson moved to approve the bills as presented. Brown seconded. All aye.
Rice said she had started some planning for the summer reading program. The theme will be “Super Heroes” . She will have the children attending draw their favorite super hero and she will post them on the wall. Rice has been in contact with Blank Park Zoo of Des Moines. They will bring some zoo animals to the library that have “super” features such as hearing, sight, or are strong in some way. The Library Foundation has agreed to help with the cost.
The second week the Nature Center will present a butterfly program. One of the city workers has agreed to help dig a spot near the library so a butterfly garden can be planted.
The third week is undecided yet – maybe a recycling theme or the Humane Society.
The fourth week will feature our local super heroes – the police department, fire department, and school staff.
Rice applied for a grant and letter of intent from F.A.C.E., Family and Community Enrichment, to get books at a very discounted price which would allow the library to give out books for free. She advised that the grant was approved.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, March 11, 2015.
