ARNOLDS PARK LIBRARY BOARD

Wednesday, June 10, 2015

5:00 P.M.

The Arnolds Park Library Board met Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. in the Arnolds Park Library.

Members present were Joyce Burgeson, Robb Keizer, Barb Woodley, Mitch Brown and Library Director, Kara Rice. Absent was Diana Jensen.

The minutes of May 13, 2015 were read and approved after a correction.

Report on summer reading program: Rice reported that the summer program has started. A total of 92 children signed up. The first week a representative from the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines was here with a snake, skunk, salamander and alligator. 85 children attended. The second week 43 children attended a program on heroes from history, followed by the “Night At the Museum” movie with a popcorn snack. Next week will be a program on community super heroes.

Rice had noticed a definite increase of patrons to the library, so researched the records for materials checked out. As of June 1, 2015 1,027 items have been checked out. Last year as of June 1st the total was 777. Eleven new families have signed up at the library.

Discussion of Library Director position being salary or hourly: Robb Keizer had talked to City Administrator Ron Walker. After Walker’s explanation of the differences between salary and hourly pay, Keizer felt a salary would be a better option and would compensate the Library Director more. After discussion by the board members and agreement by Rice, Keizer moved to change the Library Director’s pay from hourly to salary, effective as of the next pay period. Brown seconded. All aye.

Discussion of library donations: Rice had received phone calls and correspondence from Mr. William Mitchell of Indiana trying to locate some items loaned to the Arnolds Park Library in 1930 or 1933. Research by the City of Arnolds Park and the library found little information on the items other than some were at one time housed in the Harry Tennant museum (a.k.a. Kurio Kastle). None of the items were found at the present site of the Library. Rice will write a letter to Mr. Mitchell regarding their findings and give him the contact name of the Arnolds Park City Attorney for any future questions.

Rice reported that the year to date budget as of June 8th shows an unexpended balance of $13,935.45.

Bills for June were presented in the amount of $9,819.56. There were two big items. Two computers were purchased at a cost $1700. This included labor to install and Microsoft programs, The other was Amazon where the library gets their books and movies with a bill of $5,916.60. Rice advised there is enough money in the current budget to pay the Amazon bill for the last three months and will start over with them July 1st. The board members agreed this should be done.

Burgeson moved to approve the bills as presented. Brown seconded. All aye.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, July 8, 2015.
