ARNOLDS PARK LIBRARY BOARD
Wednesday, June 13, 2018
5:00 P.M.

The Arnolds Park Library Board met Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. in the Arnolds Park Library.

Present were Mary Dreier, Barb Woodley, Mitch Brown, Diana Jensen and Library Director Kara Rice. Absent was Robb Keizer.

The minutes of May 9, 2018 were read. Dreier moved to accept the minutes as written. Brown seconded. All aye.

Rice reported on the summer reading program. The Tuesday session was not well attended. This Tuesday the program will be the Humane Society. The children will read books on caring for pets and how to approach pets.

The Wednesday summer reading program started off with a free movie at the Milford Theatre. It was sold out. Each person attending was to bring a grocery item to donate to Upper Des Moines Opportunity. 15 bags full were collected. Next week, June 20th, the program will be Duke Otherwise, a magician and comedian.

Rice reported attendance at the reading program is up and check-outs are up. Last Wednesday they had 287 checkouts of library materials.

The T.V. discussed last month is purchased and has been installed. It was a bit slow, so the IT helper, Tom, added a small computer to speed it up. The new laptop has arrived, so Tom will get that hooked up.

Library Board Continuing Education: The library board members were asked to study Chapter 10 of the Iowa Library Trustees handbook entitled “Legal Matters.”

Mary Dreier asked Rice how the board members might help with upcoming programs. Rice said Wednesday evening July 11th the program is family fun night held at the Central Park at 7:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed at 6:30 p.m. to help form a line for the food.

Rice said she would be out of town on July 11th, the date of the next scheduled library board meeting. The board members agreed to postpone the board meeting until July 18th.

July 16th – 21st is the scholastic book fair, open to the public. Rice could use some volunteers during that time.

Last month Rice had reported she would ask some other librarians what programs they use for audio books. Some did a lease agreement with TEI Landmark. Rice did order some books from TEI. Baker and Taylor are also now making some playaway books and give the library a 40% discount. Kids are really into the playaway books. The library can buy used ones for $16 to $18. $300 was given to the foundation from a couple that likes the playaway books so the library could buy more.

Bills were presented through June 13, 2018 in the amount of $8,487.75. Rice said this total reflects what would be spent if we paid everyone we owe to this point. Some of the bills haven’t come in yet. After some discussion, Dreier moved to pay the bills presented. Brown seconded. All aye.

The next meeting will be July 18, 2018.
